Dumb Ways to Build Cosmetics & Emotes: How to Unlock Them

How cosmetics unlock

PlaySide’s launch post puts it simply: complete certifications to unlock new cosmetics, as well as the Master Builder modes. Certifications are the in-game challenges that also count as the 25 Steam achievements (listed on the achievements page). A launch-day streamer summed it up after a session: the cosmetics come from challenges and achievements, not from a shop.

We have not seen any paid cosmetics or an in-game store in the launch version.

The Customize menu

An official screenshot of the Customize menu shows five tabs along the top, whose icons read as the Bean itself, headwear, eyes, mouth and outfit, with Back and Apply buttons. In the headwear tab it shows 27 slots, 16 of them unlocked at the time. Recognisable ones include:

  • a hard hat, a red cap, a top hat, a beret and a sun hat,
  • a diving helmet, a traffic cone and a plunger,
  • a fried egg, a sprout, a small green alien and a poo.

The other 11 slots are shown locked. The menu sits in the lobby by the lockers.

Emotes

PlaySide’s emotes video shows the launch set doing the obvious jobs: one for when a teammate is hit by a car, one for throwing somebody off a ledge, a dance for a failed jump, a happy one for when a plan actually works, and one for posing in front of the camera.

At least one emote is a reward. On launch day, a stream crew playing Hotel Hapless read out that beating the level in under 20 minutes (the time trial) earns the Mogging emote. The certification for that time trial is Express Check Out, which 15.9% of Steam players had the day after launch.

Which certifications to chase first

The easiest ones come from normal play: Checking In (finish Hotel Hapless) and Pin Cushion (get shot 25 times by a nail gun, which a co-op crew will do for you). After that, the time trials and hidden challenges on the jobs page are the next tier. PlaySide has not published which certification unlocks which cosmetic, so we do not list one-to-one rewards.

More cosmetics are coming

PlaySide’s official FAQ says post-launch content updates will add new Jobs, tools, cosmetics and certifications. We will add each batch to the patch notes page when it lands.
